UPDATE DANCE CREATION 2008

Since this artistically acclaimed event, the participating choreographers have continued to successfully develop their careers.

Kim McCarthy

maintains a busy schedule as the Head of Classical Dance at West Australian Academy of the Arts. In November 2008, following Dance Creation, he staged Nacho Duato's 'Jardi Tancart' on the graduating students of WAAPA. In March 2009, Kim restaged 'Por Vos' for the New National Theatre Ballet in Tokyo and in July enjoyed a return to Spain when invited by Nacho Duato to guest teach his company.  Kim restaged “Por Vos” again for the Australian Ballet in August of this year, as part of its Concord program. Following that he restaged his own work '19' for the Queensland Ballet’s 'With Attitude' program in September and European tour in October.

Tim Harbour

in 2008 created ‘Schattenwelt’ for The Queensland Ballet, ‘Ignis’ for The Australian Ballet School, ‘Tocatta’ for The New York Choreographic Institute and ‘Tenement’ for The Melbourne Ballet Company - which was long-listed in The Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography. This year Tim created ‘Fractal Joy’ for The West Australian Ballet, ‘A Listening World’ for the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and ‘Songs of Light’ for The Dancers Company. In September he created ‘Leaving Songs’ for New York based Morphoses – The Wheeldon Company, which will premiered in October at Sadlers Wells in London followed by performances at City Centre in New York. Upcoming commissions include a new work for The Australian Ballet in 2010 with music by Gerard Brophy and design by Bluebottle which will have perfomances in Melbourne and Sydney. Tim is residing in Melbourne, Australia and lectures in Classical Dance at The Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. He is married to Madeleine and has recently become a father to daughter Ella.

Tim O’Donnell’s

work *Behind Door Number One” for Dance Creation 2008, was obtained by Ivan Cavalleri, Artistic Director of the West Australian Ballet to be performed as part of the company annual season at “The Quarry. Tim was then invited to take part in Milwaukee Ballets international Choreographic competition "Genesis." He was awarded first place and also took home the “Audience Choice” prize. Back home, he re-staged the piece on the West Australian Ballet in the “Ballet at the Regal” season in October. Tim currently has several projects in the pipeline and is working with a young composer in creating a new work for Milwaukee Ballet in January 2010.

Wakako Asano

Wakako has been working on two complex multi art form projects; she has continued developing “In Repose,” a site-specific collaborative project with dance, music, visual projection, sound scapes and installation, inspired by Japanese graves in Australia, which she has been working on with 3 other artists since 2006. She describes the work as a requiem: a work of KUYO, a Japanese term, which describes an art of ceremonial prayer or offering to respect, honour and calm the spirits of the deceased. In Repose” is due to be exhibited in Sydney during 2010. Wakako is also producing and performing 'Metamorphoses in 'A' Minor' - a filmed hybrid art installation and interdisciplinary work by the Canadian-British artist Sadia Sadia. Set to an original neo-classical composition produced in collaboration with the UK composer and sound artist Stephen W.Tayler, Wakako and Sadia Sadia use recorded layers and repetitive themes to build sequentially until an eventual moment of release. They describe the work as in the tradition of symbolic mysticism: “ An exploration of the transformative nature of the individual. Through imagery, signs and signifiers we excavate a cartography of struggle, conflict and resolution, a map of the soul in a concluding vision of infinite potential.” Wakako outlines her challenge with the work is to both produce and improvise movement that would be played back at speeds other than the speed at which it was originally filmed - which they have met through the use of digital cameras, including a Phantom high-speed digital camera running at 1500 fps (frames per second) to produce ultra-slow-motion.

Reed Luplau

Since Dance Creation, Reed decided to become a freelance dancer/choreographer. He has maintained an outpouring of creativity since leaving the Sydney Dance Company in January 2009. He first joined Aszure  Barton & Artists  in New York for two months, to create a new work,  'Busk'. He returned to Sydney in March 2009, to make 'Bleecker' for the Australian Ballet's Bodytorque season.  He then worked with Kelley Abbey to perform for Natalie Bassingthwaighte at the 2009 Logie Awards.   June 2009, he was awarded the 'Most Outstanding Performance by A Male Dancer' at the Australian Dance Awards, for his role in Aszure Barton's 'Sids Waltzing Masquerade. He was also nominated for the Helpmann Awards. Reed’s next assignment was to choreograph a children's show called 'Music for Tutu's' a celebration of the music of Tchaikovsky, at the Sydney Opera House, and a solo choreographed by Kelley Abbey for the project 'My Mutation'.  He choreographed a new 25-minute piece 'A Day In A Life' for Quantum Leap 2 in Canberra with Marko Panzic,, followed by 'Conquer' for the graduating students of Youth Ballet WA. He returned as a guest to perform 'Sids Waltzing Masquerade' for the Sydney Dance Company, before returning to New York to perform 'Busk' for Aszure Barton & Artists at the Ringling International Arts Festival.  In October 2009, he was a guest performer with the West Australian Ballet before moving permanently to New York in March 2010.
